Sympathetic Press is proud to present The Cabinet of Dr. Deekay, written and illustrated by Camille Rose Garcia. The long-awaited book made its debut in print at DesignerCon 2019. There she did book signings throughout the run of the convention, as well as released limited edition prints. This was followed by a book signing tour, continuing to La Luz de Jesus gallery in Los Angeles on December 8th. The Cabinet of Dr. Deekay is published by Sympathetic Press, a cutting-edge indie publisher founded under Sympathy For the Record Industry. The vivid colors that animate her cute but macabre visuals have annointed her as one of the most distinct voices in the pop surrealist movement, alongside titans like Mark Ryden, iconic pop surrealist, and the surrealist painter Lenora Carrington. Described as a dystopian allegory, The Cabinet of Dr. Deekay is not Camille’s first foray into the realm of fairy-tales. She was previously tapped by Harper Collins to create lush and visually stunning artwork for classic lore like Cinderella, Snow White, and Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland.
Garcia’s journey into creating The Cabinet of Dr. Deekay began seven years ago, starting with the worst week of her life. Over a period of five days, she had to undergo multiple dental surgeries, resulting in some of the most visceral and terrifying hallucinations she has ever encountered—visions that would inspire the world of Dr. Deekay and its twisted inhabitants.
The Cabinet of Dr. Deekay is a surreal psychedelic commentary on our modern world that follows young Alex Winchester after he wakes up in a strange hospital and finds parts of himself are missing—he’s the latest victim of a cruel world in which everyone is systematically being “rearranged.”
The story begins in an operating room scene, where Alex awakens in recovery from a mysterious surgical procedure that’s been administered by a team of creepy medics and a doctor with a giant molar for a head—the infamous Dr. Deekay. Things only get weirder from there. It is soon revealed that the Frankenstein-ian goings-on at the hospital are being carried out on the orders of the Orwellian-sounding Party of Deconstruction, under the aegis of the Project for a Future Tomorrow. The Cabinet of Dr. Deekay is a thinly-veiled political allegory for our times, exploring the rise of a fascist dictatorship in a surreal world very different—yet so much like—our own.
In the tradition of Orwell, Huxley, and Roald Dahl, Garcia carefully blends humor and horror to create a singular world reflecting our own reality—life in an invisible asylum of pharmaceuticals, consumerism, and consumption that’s destroying the earth, our oceans, our bodies and our psyches.
A full novel, the book is also illustrated by Garcia, drawing us into the world of Dr. Deekay in her inimitable style.
